The jamming transition of Granular Media

چکیده

A statistical mechanical approach to granular material is proposed. Using lattice models from standard Statistical Mechanics and results from a mean field replica approach we find a jamming transition in granular media closely related to the glass transition in super-cooled liquids. These models reproduce the logarithmic relaxation in granular compaction and reversible-irreversible lines, in agreement with experimental data. The models also exhibit aging effects and breakdown of the usual fluctuation dissipation relation. It is shown that the glass transition may be responsible for the logarithmic relaxation and may be related to the cooperative effects underlying many phenomena of granular materials such as the Reynolds transition.

Glass transition in granular media

– In the framework of schematic hard spheres lattice models for granular media we investigate the phenomenon of the " jamming transition ". In particular, using Edwards' approach, by analytical calculations at a mean field level, we derive the system phase diagram and show that " jamming " corresponds to a phase transition from a " fluid " to a " glassy " phase, observed when crystallization is...

Critical scaling in linear response of frictionless granular packings near jamming.

We study the origin of the scaling behavior in frictionless granular media above the jamming transition by analyzing their linear response. The response to local forcing is non-self-averaging and fluctuates over a length scale that diverges at the jamming transition. The response to global forcing becomes increasingly nonaffine near the jamming transition. This is due to the proximity of floppy...

We investigate the dynamic evolution of jamming in granular media through fluctuations in the granular drag force. The successive collapse and formation of jammed states give a stick-slip nature to the fluctuations which is independent of the contact surface between the grains and the dragged object – thus implying that the stress-induced collapse is nucleated in the bulk of the granular sample...

Acoustic probing of the jamming transition in an unconsolidated granular medium.

Experimentally determined dispersion relations for acoustic waves guided along the mechanically free surface of an unconsolidated granular packed structure provide information on the elasticity of granular media at very low pressures that are naturally controlled by the gravitational acceleration and the depth beneath the surface. The experiments confirm recent theoretical predictions that rela...

Transition from rolling to jamming in thin granular layers.

We study the granular jamming transition for sheared layers of spherical beads ranging in thickness from 1 to 3 times the grain diameter d. As the layer thickness increases slightly above d, the measured friction jumps discontinuously from 0.02 to >0.1, marking the transition from rolling to jamming. Above a critical layer thickness for jamming, the effective granular pressure displays a power ...
